Chamois ApartmentsStories hidden in the names of our apartments

When you stay at Chamois Apartments, you are not staying only in the High Tatras. You are in a place where for more than two centuries the story of mineral springs, healing waters and the people who helped shape the identity of today's Starý Smokovec has been written. It is therefore no coincidence that each of our four apartments bears a name closely connected with the history of this exceptional place.

The building that houses the apartments stands directly above the source of Tatra mineral water. This water continues the tradition of the legendary Smokovec acidic springs, which were known far beyond the borders of the Tatras and were already exported in the 18th century to many towns of the then Kingdom of Hungary. It was precisely the mineral springs that were at the origin of Starý Smokovec and influenced its development into a significant spa and tourist centre.

Apartment Castor

The name Castor refers to one of the two original mineral springs that shaped the history of Starý Smokovec. Together with the Pollux spring they formed the basis of the local acidic-spring tradition and significantly contributed to the emergence of the first spa activities in this area.

The name Castor comes from Greek mythology, where it represents one of the legendary twin brothers. The spring bore this name at a time when the mineral water from Smokovec was becoming known throughout the Habsburg monarchy and gained a reputation as a quality natural resource.

Apartment Castor (101) symbolizes origin, stability and tradition. It recalls the beginnings of the story that continue today through the Tatra mineral water bottled right in the same building.

Apartment Pollux

Pollux was the second of the historic Smokovec springs and the natural partner of the Castor spring. Their names come from the story of the mythological twins Castor and Pollux, who symbolized cohesion, balance and mutual connection.

These two springs created the foundation of the reputation of the local mineral waters. In the 18th and 19th centuries visitors from various corners of the monarchy came here to enjoy the beneficial effects of the acidic springs and the mountain environment.

Apartment Pollux (102) represents a connection between history and the present. Just as the springs once created a single story, today the tradition of mineral waters is combined here with modern accommodation comfort.

Apartment Rainer

Apartment Rainer is named after Johann Georg Rainer, one of the most important figures in the history of Starý Smokovec. In the first half of the 19th century he contributed significantly to the development of the area and transformed it into a sought-after place for guests seeking health, relaxation, and a stay in nature.

Under his leadership new accommodation facilities were created, the surroundings of the springs were improved and the tourist infrastructure was developed. Thanks to his activities, Smokovec gradually became a centre of spa treatment and tourism in the High Tatras.

His name is also borne today by the well-known Rainer's Chalet below Hrebienok, the oldest preserved high-mountain hut in the Tatras.

Apartment Rainer (103) is therefore a tribute to the man who stood at the beginnings of Tatra hospitality and laid the foundations of tourism in the region.

Apartmán Xantus

The name Xantus refers to the notable naturalist, zoologist and traveller John Xantus. This renowned 19th-century scientist became famous for his research work in Europe, America and Asia and contributed significantly to the development of the natural sciences.

During his life he also visited the Tatras and his name later became associated with one of the local mineral springs. It was during his era that mineral waters became the subject of scientific study and scholarly interest.

Apartment Xantus (104) symbolizes exploration, knowledge and respect for nature. It reminds us that the Tatras are not only a place for relaxation but also a land with a rich natural and scientific history.

A place where history still lives

The names of our apartments are not accidental. Each of them tells a part of the story of Starý Smokovec, its mineral springs and the people who helped create the unique character of this Tatra settlement. During your stay you can discover not only the beauty of the mountains but also the history of the place where you stand.

And perhaps over a glass of Tatra mineral water you will realise that the story that began more than two centuries ago continues today – thanks in part to you.
